Cheti Chand

Cheti Chand is a New Year Day festival of the Sindhi community. It is celebrated on the first day of the Chaitra month of the Hindu calendar year. In Sindhi, Chaitra is known as Chat and therefore this festival was christened as Cheti Chand.

Cheti Chand festival is celebrated in the honour of the birth of Ishtadeva Uderolal, the patron saint of the Sindhis. This day is considered to be very religious and celebrated with pomp and gaiety. On this day people worship water - the elixir of life.

Jhulelal’s followers observe Chalion Saheb. For almost forty days and nights they remain on the bank of Sindhu and every evening they worship Varan and pray for their solace and salvation.



At the end of Chalion Saheb they celebrate another feast known as ‘Thanks Giving Day5. A procession is taken out in which lakhs of people participate. The Sindhi folk dance called Chhoj is performed.
