Dharmaraj Puja
The Dharmaraj Puja, another Hindu ritual performed in Bengal, also features low socioeconomic status individuals self-inflicting harm in front of large audiences. Participants come primarily from the untouchable caste. Dharmaraj Puja involves some extreme behaviors such as walking on burming embers, whipping, pressing thorns over one's and hanging by the legs over open firepits. Participwrion seems to confer a temporary gain in social status (Rohner & Chaki-Sircar, 1988).
