Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
(The Teacher)
President of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, was awarded with highest civilian award of India ‘Bharat Ratna’. His Birthday 5th September, is celebrated as Teacher’s Day in our country.
He was born on 5th September 1888 in the religious town of Tirutani in Tamil Nadu. He was brought up in a traditional culture. He studied in Tirupati, Vellore and Madras. He got his job as lecturer in Madras. There he published the “Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore” in 1918. After that a well known book “Indian Philosophy” was written by him. His knowledge of both east and west, brought him to the wordly success.
Many prestigious academic appointments came his way, one of them was chair of Professor of Eastern Religious and Ethics of Oxford, which he retained for 16 years. He was also elected to the Fellowship of Academy in 1939. He wrote several books such as “Gautam the Buddha, Mahatma Gandhi—Essays and Reflections on his Life and Work, India and China”.
Dr. Radhakrishnan went to Moscow as India’s Ambassador to Russia. He visited many places and represented Indian Government. His two interviews with Stalin brought him by world wide fame. Dr. Radhakrishnan was elected Vice President and Chairman of Rajya Sabha in 1952. During the period, he visited many countries. He also served as Chancellor of Delhi University and President of Sahitya Academy. His other well known books are “Heart of Hindustan”, “The Hindu View of Life”, “A source book of Indian Philosophy” etc. He was elected President of India in 1962 after retirement of Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
world Knew mm as genius, pnuosopner, writer and administrator. He got varied achievements and lived a purposeful life. He made contribution to both academic and public life. He was one of the most learned and prolific commentator on Hindu Philosophy in 20th century. In recognition of his merilorious service to the Nation, the highest award of the nation ‘Bharat Ratna’ was conferred on him in 1954.
This great man left the world on 17th April 1975 at the age of 86. He had been honoured by many other Awards like Order of Merit in 1962, Templeton Prize in 1975. He was also Elected Fellow of the British Academy in 1938. He received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 1961.
